about

In early 2012, Grim decided to start working on a third album, with adaptations of Frédéric Chopin’s well-known Préludes. Traditionally, preludes had been informal finger exercises, designed as a warm-up for the performer, but Chopin transfigured them into a fully-fledged art form. Most of the Préludes were written by Chopin in late 1838 and early 1839 during a miserable winter spent on the island of Mallorca with his notorious mistress George Sand. This origin can be heard in the atmosphere of the pieces, which are filled with either bliss or gloom. Chopin’s Préludes sing of hope and desire, but also of sad hearts, lost love, homesickness, and dark desperation. One of Chopin’s friends, Robert Schumann, once described them as ‘feverish and broken sketches (…) or ruins perhaps (…), all disorder and wild confusion.’
